To avoid "wrong-sided surgery," my department covers the nonoperative leg with an antiembolism stocking. Placement of the stocking is a routine preoperative order. In the patient's preoperative suite, we ask the patient which leg the surgery is to be performed on, then explain that the stocking will be one more visual cue to the surgeon and staff regarding the correct side for surgery. This method is particularly helpful in outpatient settings when multiple surgeries are scheduled for the same day.
I find that my patients' anxiety level is lower when they have a stocking on the nonoperative leg. It gives them extra assurance that the surgeon and crew will be reminded of the correct surgical limb.
