Commentary The prototype preparticipation physical exam for student-athletes (circa 1969) consisted mostly of a quick check for heart murmurs and hernias. Today the exam is more extensive, but it still falls short of its potential for protecting athletes. Needed: a consensus on the objectives of the exam and a standardized method of conducting it. David W. Glover, MD; Barry J. Maron, MD; Gordon O. Matheson, MD, PhD
Fatalities and Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports, 1982-1997 Changes in rules and equipment have made interscholastic sports safer in recent decades, but the record for 1982 through 1997 shows that there is still room for improvement. Wrestling, for example, accounted for 34 direct deaths and permanent or serious injuries. The authors make sport-specific and general safety recommendations. Robert C. Cantu, MD; Frederick O. Mueller, PhD
Exercise During Pregnancy Endurance athletes have been known to complete a full 50- or 60-mile running regimen one week and give birth to a healthy baby the next. This sort of zeal obviously isn't for everyone, but the list of restrictions and contraindications for pregnant women who want to exercise is getting shorter. Raul Artal, MD, with Carl Sherman
Valgus Knee Instability in an Adolescent After a 15-year-old football player was hit on the outside of his left knee, symptoms and initial x-rays strongly suggested a medial collateral ligament sprain. Subsequent imaging studies, however, revealed that the injury was more serious. Kenneth R. Veenema, MD
