Savio L-Y Woo, PhD, was awarded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Prize for Sport Science January 13 in New York City. Woo is professor and vice chair of research in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). According to a press release from UPMC, the award recognizes Woo for his investigations of knee ligament biomechanics and for pioneering the "motion is good" theory in rehabilitation. The IOC prize is considered the Nobel Prize of sports medicine and sports science. It is awarded in conjunction with each Summer and Winter Olympic Games, and was first awarded in 1996. The award, which includes an Olympic medal, a cash prize, and a certificate of recognition, is endowed by the Parke-Davis division of Warner Lambert Co.
